AI & Generative Search Visibility

Your content got quoted. A competitor got the customer.

Being cited as the source and being named as the vendor are two different outcomes. We see it constantly: a business's own page is pulled into an AI answer as reference material, and the recommendation at the end of that same answer names somebody else.

The diagnosis

This is not a content problem.

What people assume

"We are not showing up in ChatGPT, so we need to write more content."

Then they publish for six months and nothing changes, because the thing that was broken was never the writing.

What is actually happening

Content good enough to be cited is already doing its job. The models cannot resolve you into one credible business, so they recommend one they can.

It is an entity and authority problem. Unlike most of search, that is diagnosable in an afternoon and fixable in weeks.

Entity and structured data

Making you resolvable to one business

The unglamorous half, and the half that moves the number. Four systems each holding a slightly different version of you is the root cause of most invisibility we find.

Entity resolution

Google, Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity each build their own picture of who you are. When those pictures disagree, you are three partial businesses instead of one credible one. This is the fix that moves the most.

Structured data, built and validated

Organisation, location, service, product and parent company. Built properly and then checked against what the systems actually read back, not just dropped in and assumed.

Corporate authority inheritance

A brand sitting inside a larger group should structurally inherit that group's credibility. Most do not, because nothing in their markup says the relationship exists.

Knowledge panel and directory consolidation

Cleaning up the sources these models read from, so the same facts come back from every direction rather than three versions of your address.

Content and demand

Then the writing, aimed properly

Content still matters. It just cannot carry a business the systems cannot identify, which is why it comes second here.

Authority content from real demand

Built against what people are actually searching and asking, not a keyword tool's guess at it.

Answer-shaped content

Written for the questions a buyer types into an assistant, which look almost nothing like the ones they type into a search box.

Comparison and category coverage

The pages that get quoted at the exact moment somebody is choosing between you and two competitors.

Measurement

Three numbers, one of which matters most

Baselined before we touch anything, so the before-and-after is real rather than remembered.

Named or not

AI-answer position tracking

Whether you are named when the category question gets asked, tracked over time across assistants rather than checked once.

Share

Competitor answer share

Who else is getting named on the same question set, and how often. This is the number that tells you whether you are gaining.

The one

Citation versus recommendation

The split between being used as source material and being the answer. This is the number that actually matters, and almost nobody measures it.

Where this earns its place

Two situations where it beats everything else

Thin-volume categories

Niche and B2B categories where search volume is too low for conventional SEO or paid search to move anything. When only a handful of people a month are looking, being the name that comes back matters more than a ranking position.

"We tried search, it didn't work"

In most of those cases the campaign was fine. The business was structurally invisible to the systems doing the recommending, so the spend went into a funnel that ended at somebody else's name.

FAQ

Questions worth asking before you buy this

What is the difference between SEO and AI search visibility?

SEO decides where you sit in a list of links. AI search visibility decides whether an assistant names you when somebody asks it to recommend a business like yours. They overlap, but you can rank well and still never be recommended, which is the situation most businesses we audit are actually in.

My content already shows up in AI answers. Is that not the same thing?

No, and this is the distinction the whole service rests on. Being cited as the source and being named as the vendor are two different outcomes. We regularly see a business whose own page is pulled into an AI answer as reference material, while the recommendation at the end of that same answer names a competitor. Your content did the work and somebody else got the customer.

If my content is being cited, why am I not the recommendation?

Because it is not a content problem. Content good enough to be cited is already doing its job. It is an entity and authority problem: the systems doing the recommending cannot resolve you to one confident, credible business, so they name one they can. That is a structural fix, not a writing fix.

How long does this take?

Unusually for search, it is diagnosable in an afternoon and generally fixable in weeks rather than quarters. Entity and structured data problems are concrete: they are either right or they are not, and correcting them does not require waiting out a ranking cycle. Content and authority work compounds more slowly on top of that.

Who is this actually for?

Two situations. Niche categories where search volume is too thin for conventional SEO or paid search to move the needle, so the handful of buyers who do ask an assistant matter disproportionately. And any business that has already tried search and been told it did not work. In most of those cases the campaign was fine and the business was structurally invisible to the systems doing the recommending.

How do you prove it worked?

We baseline the question set before touching anything, then track whether you are named on those questions over time, who else is named, and the citation-versus-recommendation split. We do not forecast. We measure first and then report what moved, including when it did not.

Is this the same as the GEO tool on your platform page?

Related, not identical. The service on this page is delivered work we do today. The Lifto.ai GEO dashboard is the product version of the tracking, still in build, which will put the same measurement in your hands to watch continuously. You do not need the dashboard for the service to be measurable.
